Frequently Asked Questions
Nebraska Unique Identification Number (NUID) and Password
For security purposes, all applicants receive a Nebraska Unique Identification Number (NUID) and a temporary password during the application process. A personal MavLINK password must be created upon initial login.
The NUID is an eight-digit number unique to the University of Nebraska system and may be used across all University of Nebraska campuses.
Use of Social Security Number
A Social Security number is requested on the admissions application for credential verification, document matching, and determination of financial aid and scholarship eligibility.
Applicants without a Social Security number may apply for admission but are not eligible for federal financial aid.
Health Requirement Information
Applicants born on or after January 1, 1957, must provide official documentation of two MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccinations before registering for courses.
Domestic applicants who graduated from a U.S. high school are exempt from this requirement.
For additional information, contact Undergraduate Admissions at 402.554.2393.
Residency for Tuition Purposes
Residency Classification
To qualify for resident tuition rates, an individual must establish 12 consecutive months of residency in Nebraska unless an exception applies under University or Board of Regents policy.
Individuals who relocate to Nebraska primarily to attend college are classified as nonresidents for tuition purposes.
Enrollment in more than half-time coursework at a Nebraska postsecondary institution during the 12 months prior to applying for residency is considered strong evidence that relocation occurred for educational purposes. In such cases, the individual will remain classified as a nonresident.
Applicants classified as nonresidents who believe they qualify for residency should review the Application for Residence Classification for Tuition Purposes. Residency reclassification is not retroactive and applies only to the term in which approval is granted.
Resident Tuition for Certain Non-U.S. Citizens
Under Nebraska state law and Board of Regents policy, certain applicants who do not hold U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residency may qualify for resident tuition if eligibility criteria are met.
Eligibility includes:
-
Graduation from a Nebraska high school or receipt of an equivalent diploma in Nebraska
-
Continuous residence in Nebraska for at least three years prior to high school graduation while residing with a parent, guardian, or conservator
-
Submission of an affidavit stating intent to apply for U.S. permanent residency at the earliest opportunity, if applicable
Additional documentation may be required. Residency determinations are made in accordance with University and Board of Regents policy.
Omaha Urban Rate (OUR) Tuition
The Omaha Urban Rate (OUR) Tuition program provides reduced tuition rates to eligible high school graduates and current residents from the following states:
Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
For eligibility requirements and application procedures, refer to the UNO OUR Tuition website.
Nebraska State Income Tax Credit
Applicants who do not qualify for resident tuition rates but who pay Nebraska state income tax may be eligible for a tuition credit. This credit may also apply to spouses and dependents of eligible Nebraska taxpayers.
The tuition credit is based on the amount of Nebraska state income tax paid in the prior calendar year. Tuition cannot be reduced below the resident rate.
Applications for the Non-Resident Nebraska Income Tax Tuition Credit are available through the UNO Cashiering and Student Accounts Office or on the UNO website. For questions, contact 402.554.2324.
Veteran's Promise
Under the Nebraska Veteran Promise Act, eligible military service members and veterans who meet UNO’s general admission requirements are guaranteed admission to undergraduate programs, whether attending in person or online.
This policy is consistent with University of Nebraska Board of Regents (BOR) guidelines.
Applicants Who Apply but Do Not Enroll
Applicants who submit an application but do not enroll must notify the UNO Office of Undergraduate Admissions via email at unoadmissions@unomaha.edu. Upon notification, the application will be withdrawn. A new application is required to enroll in a future term.
Additional considerations include:
-
Transcripts submitted for admission are retained for one year. After one year, new transcripts must be submitted.
-
Applicants awarded financial aid from a non-UNO source must notify the Office of Financial Support and Scholarships to avoid cancellation or adjustment of UNO aid.
For questions regarding application status, residency classification, tuition rates, or financial aid eligibility, contact the UNO Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
