A comprehensive survey of the evolution of the American Novel from the 1780s to the present day. Special emphasis will be placed on how a broad range of authors have responded to changing cultural and historical circumstances, and on how they have expressed widely varying viewpoints depending on their own gender, race, geographic region, and/or ethnicity.
